Uralic Languages
Finnish , Estonian, Saami
(Lapp), Hungarian and
several languages of central Russia
The Uralic languages are usually divided into two subgroups as
follows:
- Finic languages: Finnish, Estonian, Karelian,
Livonian (not the same as the Latvian dialect called
Livonian), Veps, Cheremis, Mordvin, Votyak, Zyrian, and
the Sami (Lapp) languages;
- Urgric languages: which includes Hungarian,
Ostyak, and Vogul), and the Samoyedic languages (spoken
in Northwest Siberia).
Altaic , another
important north-Eurasian family of languages, has sometimes been
linked with Uralic to form one larger family, the Ural-Altaic
languages. However, this relationship is in dispute.
