Free-space waves

Unimpeded propagation of radio waves through free space.

Free space propagation is the least interesting (but the most common) form of propagation. Most VHF and UHF transmissions are subject to free space propagation, although the refractive index of the intervening air becomes important after short distances and other modes occur.
