Using RS-232 with Yaesu Radios

Interface Unit: FIF-232C (converts 5V TTL to RS-232 polar)

Standard Connections Used: TXD, RXD, GND

Flow Control: None (for the equipment featured here)

Type of RS-232 Command Set: Binary, 5-byte fixed length frames (1-byte opcode + 4bytes of data/parameters)

Data Parameters: 4800 bps (fixed), 1 start, 8 data + 2 stop bits

Overview of RS-232 Command Set

The RS-232 command set used by the Yaesu range of radios is not ASCII text, so it is not possible to use a text-based terminal to type commands directly into the radio. Instead a 5-byte frame is used in which each command (or response) comprises an opcode and 4 bytes of data or parameters.

Unfortunately, different command interfaces have been used with the different radios that have been produced - Yaesu have not standardised their RS-232 commands set. For this reason, I will only describe the interface for the FRG-100, FRG-9600 and FRG-8800 receivers (the receivers being of most interest to readers). For other models, you will need to consult your manual.
